Q&A With Alex

Can you tell us a bit about your role at Royalty Solutions and what your day-to-day responsibilities involve?

My role at Royalty Solutions is primarily focused on the processing, analysis, and delivery of royalty statements to over 25+ label clients throughout the year, providing additional services and administrative assistance when new or complicated items come up. Some of these services include payment processing, third-party communications, catalog audits, earnings projections and assistance processing publishing royalties (where applicable).

Can you share a little about your background before joining RSC? What led you to pursue a career in music industry and what do you enjoy most about it?

I’ve always been deeply connected to sound and music ever since I was a little girl – it’s very rare for you to find me in a quiet moment in my life without something playing in the background. I was drawn to the business-side of the industry during my last year of undergrad at Emerson College where I was learning sound design/audio post-production.. and never looked back. After getting my Masters in Global Entertainment and Music Business from Berklee College of Music in Valencia, Spain, I began working in small labels doing royalties, licensing and publishing. After wonderful experiences working for !K7 Music, Peermusic and Warner Chappell, I began working with Royalty Solutions and have felt right at home ever since. What I enjoy most about music royalties is that while the work can be very straightforward, this industry has some of the coolest clients you will ever work with. I love being able to connect with the work on a musical-level, and the passion I share for the artists catalogs spills over into the work itself constantly. I can’t imagine being anywhere else but right where I am today.

Can you share an example of how RSC has successfully helped an artist, publishing company or label achieve their goals?

I have a few recent examples of clients with larger label catalogs who have grown past their capacities to manually produce royalty statements themselves and have come to us for assistance. We simplify and streamline royalty processing as a whole (our bread and butter), and our current systems allow us to take on clients with varying levels of data, both large and small scale. In these instances, we are now producing their statements more efficiently and accurately, allowing these clients the time to move away from royalties and to focus on other aspects of their business, which is usually the primary goal. We also pride ourselves in our communication and transparency throughout the process, which limits confusion and questions that may come up otherwise. In these cases, we have successfully established processes and timelines with our clients and are able to effectively work together to make the royalties process much simpler.

What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of work?

Outside of the office, I’m a huge fan of horror movies and producing techno music under my moniker Madame De Fer, which combines these worlds into something unique and experimental. I also love cooking large meals for family, exploring new parts of the Southwest with my husband and snuggling with my two fur babes, Mesa and Pavo. I also love science, history and traveling – mention any of those topics and you will capture me.

What's your go-to song or playlist that helps you stay motivated and focused during the workday?

I have a personal playlist I’ve been building for a while, based on DJ sets I’ve performed via stream as Madame De Fer. The energy, excitement and long-form songs keep me on my toes while I’m focused in on numbers: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6y6XyKnbggoFRyLSeEo1ee

What’s your favorite genre or artist to listen to, and how does music inspire or influence your work?

My whole life, I’ve had a love for most genres of music, even if it’s just a few diamonds in the rough (so to speak). When I was younger, I swayed more into the rock scene and had a deep love for bands like The Blood Brothers, Circa Survive, Silversun Pickups and Underoath. As I’ve gotten older, I find my love of electronic music tends to outweigh other types of music, and while I’m working, I will listen to artists like Clark, Perc, Recondite and Massive Attack to keep me moving along. I have a hard time working to music with a lot of lyrics – especially if I’m homed in on math – so I gravitate to electronic music that’s more melodic, but with tension. It helps me stay focused and excited throughout the day, and I believe that it impacts my work positively.
