Q&A With Jess
Can you tell us a bit about your role at Royalty Solutions and what your day-to-day responsibilities involve?
One of my favorite things about Royalty Solutions is that my day to day is always different. Depending on what client I am working on, it can be anything from processing royalties to answering emails and questions, loading bills and sending payments, to helping with copyright issues. It’s really great to be able to touch on so many different areas of the industry – one never gets bored!
What first sparked your interest in the music industry?
From a young age I wanted to be a musician. One of my first memories is of singing on stage when I was five. I have centered my life around music. I have always been on the performing and entertaining side of music. This being the case, I naturally wanted to know more about every aspect of the music and the industry that brings the music to the world.
Can you share your journey to RSC, and what inspired your career in the music industry?
My career in music publishing began at Sony/ATV Music Publishing, BMG Rights Management, and SESAC, where I really dove into PRO accounting and processes, then I found my way to RSC, excited to keep supporting the music industry in new ways.)
Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I really enjoy the power of music and how it can transform a mood and persona. Being in the music industry was a way for me to be close to music and also help those making music in the process. I went to college and received a Music Business degree, and through various internships got my start in the industry.
Can you share an example of how RSC has successfully helped an artist, publishing company or label achieve their goals?
There was a publishing company who had recently purchased a catalogue and wanted to continue to grow their business without having to focus on the day to day processing of royalty information. RSC was able to transfer the existing data into a new system with improved matching capabilities and fixed incomplete split information. This led to a simplified quarter end process for the company, as well as increase in quarterly revenue, and allowed the business to focus on what mattered to them most.
What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of work?
Outside of work, I like to write songs and play in various places around town. I also like to crochet little animals and fun things for my friends, and read lots of different books. I’m always trying to expand my knowledge base.
How does your love for music influence the way you approach your work?
My love of music helps me to focus on the importance of what we do. Because I know the impact music has beyond the industry, it feels especially important to make sure the rates are correct and the songwriters are getting all they are due. What they bring to the table artistically makes the world a better place, and anything we can do on our side to make their lives easier, or at least make it so they can focus on bringing art into the world is a worthy pursuit in my book.
